Wailea, located on the sunny southwest part of Maui known as “South Maui,” is widely regarded as the most beautiful and luxurious community in Maui and for good reason. This leeward location provides world class sandy beaches and a dry sunny climate year round. With five separate beaches along a mile and a half of shore with views of Lanai, Kahoolawe and Molokini, Wailea is one of the most sought after destinations on earth. The leeward shore offers some of the best vantage points for winter whale watching. The most exceptional views of all are from the Wailea beaches where in the winter months the whales can be seen playing just 100 yards from the shore.
Wailea Beach in Wailea has excellent swimming with restroom and equipment rentals. Along with most other Wailea beaches, a paved beach walk meandering past Wailea’s world class hotels, restaurants, and shops was named “America’s Best Beach” in 1999. It is an early morning and sunset walkers (and joggers) paradise! The Wailea Beach Villas and the villa known as “The Maui Escape” are located on the north end of Wailea Beach.
U’lua Beach Park in Wailea is another local favorite with excellent swimming, snorkeling, and beachcombing. Polo Beach in Wailea is popular with Maui’s residents and visitors alike. This beach provides excellent swimming and snorkeling as well as picnic tables and restrooms for your convenience.
Just south of Wailea is Makena. Maluaka Beach in Makena is adjacent to the Maui Prince Hotel and offers excellent swimming and snorkeling. The beautiful green sea turtles are abundant in this coastal paradise. Makena Beach State Park, also known as “Big Beach” in Makena, is one of Maui’s signature beaches with a seemingly endless expanse of white sand. Adjacent to “Big Beach” is “Little Beach”. Paths guide one from Big Beach over a rock outcropping to well hidden “Little Beach”, which is known for its clothing optional reputation. Makena is an unspoiled paradise featuring some of Maui’s most beautiful scenery and beaches. Secluded, yet not isolated, Makena is located just minutes from world class shopping and the Wailea resorts.
